What We Mean by "Heritage"
This module explains SHI’s definition of heritage - the continuity of our people and their culture - and why stewardship matters.
What Heritage Means to SHI
Heritage is not merely a collection of buildings or abstract customs; it is a people. It is the living expression of us - the historic American population that built this state. Our heritage is the blood, faith, and shared history that binds us together as a distinct people. When we speak of heritage, we are talking about the ethno-cultural continuity required to ensure that our descendants remain the masters of their own destiny.
We inherit this way of life like a family farm. Our job is to act as stewards: protecting what works, improving it where we can, and ensuring it is handed on in good condition to our children. To preserve our civilization, we must maintain the cohesion of the people who created it.
Why the Distinction Matters
Some attempt to frame interest in heritage as merely "civic." While it is true that we value high social trust, local rule of law, and strong schools, these outcomes are not accidents. They are the products of a specific culture and a cohesive, like-minded people.
When mass migration overwhelms that continuity, these civic goods inevitably decline. We reject the idea that we must be demographic abstractions. Instead, we advocate for the preservation of the Indiana we love for the people who come after us. This requires us to be clear-eyed about the necessity of maintaining our unique character and ensuring the continuity of our people.
Stewardship in Practice
Protect American people: Support policies that prioritize the needs of existing residents and ensure the continuity of our culture.
Reject replacement: Stewardship requires that we consent to the character of our communities. Mass migration that alters that character against our will is a failure of leadership.
Focus on the future: Every decision must answer the question: "Does this preserve our people and our way of life for our grandchildren?"
When we defend our heritage, we are doing more than protecting town squares; we are securing the future of our people. This clear, principled stance gives us the leverage we need to recruit, train, and deploy effectively across Indiana.
